There is a lot of information on both Cub Scouting and the Pack 119 program in our Parent Handbook. We have two formal recruiting events during the year. Our main event is our Fall Roundup, held in late August or early September. We also have a smaller event in mid-May. You can, however, join Pack 119 at any time during the year.
Cub Scouts is open to boys in the first through fifth grades. For Cub Scouting, boys are considered to be in the first grade on June 1 (even though they may still be in kindergarten for a few more days). By joining in the spring, a boy is able to participate in the Pack's summertime program, which includes camping and other outdoor activities. The same registration fee is charged regardless of whether a boy joins in the spring or the fall.
Cub Scouts advance through various ranks based on their current grade level in school. First-graders are Tiger Cubs, while second-graders are Wolves and third-graders are Bears. Fourth- and fifth-graders are Webelos. In Pack 119, Webelos scouts cross over into Boy Scouts in the middle of the fifth grade (usually in December or January).
To join Pack 119, you need to fill out a Cub Scout Application, available from our Cubmaster, Brian Minsker. Email him at or call him at 352-7525 to get an application. The registration fee is $45, which covers the remainder of the current year and all of the following calendar year. Our registration fee when we recharter in January each year is $30. In other words, if a boy joins Pack 119 at the end of his kindergarten year, he would pay $45 and then would pay $30 in the December of his second-grade year (and each December following through fourth grade).
Each boy also needs to have a Cub Scout uniform. Pack 119 keeps its uniform requirements to a minimum in order to keep the costs down. The minimum Pack 119 uniform and its cost (as of 1/1/2006) is:
It should be noted that if the blue shirt is purchased slightly on the large side, it can last a boy from first grade through third grade. As a Webelos scout, a boy can wear a tan uniform shirt with blue shoulder tabs that they can also use in Boy Scouts (with red shoulder tabs).
The following patches complete the uniform shirt. They can be sewn on at home, sewn on by a person at the Council office for $1/patch, or attached using a product called Badge Magic (available at the scout office for approximately $8, which will attach all unit patches and all rank patches earned throughout Cub Scouting).
Optional uniform items include hats ($11.80) and belts ($6.30 to $8.80, depending on size and buckle). All of these items can be found at the Prairielands Council scout office. A map to the scout office can be found here.
Please note that Pack 119 believes that financial concerns should not prevent a boy from enjoying Cub Scouting. If you have concerns over the cost of joining the pack, contact the Cubmaster or Pack Committee Chairman. All such discussions are kept strictly confidential within the pack committee.
